Music is created in the mind.
When one looks out for it and seeks it, it comes in a moment like a sudden realization. That one key tune which would hold the song together is something that is primitively originating from the brain. To bring it into the world beyond a human brain, one could use the voice or the help of an instrument. When both voice and instrumental sounds blend well together, music could become anybody’s greatest companion or philosopher.
The sound origination from voice and instruments individually also make up for great music. Instruments have a great potential to move a listener. There are so many musical instruments out there, which come from different parts of the world, that there is no dearth of a wide variety of sounds to soothe the human ear. Basic things around us like buckets, tin cans, lids, plates and spoons can also turn into musical instruments if need be.
However, for the sake of differentiation, musical instruments are classified into various types depending on the kind and range of sound they create.
Instruments are classified considering their range when they are being used in the context of an orchestra or other ensemble. The range of an instrument here is compared with the range of another musical instrument of the same family. The terms used to classify the range are those of singing voice as in this area, the key is the blend. One such classification is of the bass instruments.
Bass Instruments: double bass, bass guitar, bass saxophone, tuba, bass drum and other such instruments fall into this category. Bass describes tones of low frequency or range. In musical compositions, these are the lowest parts of the harmony. These type of instruments are used to supply counter-melody or a counterpoint in a harmonic context either to outline or juxtapose the progress of chords one after the other. They are also used to underline the rhythm with percussion. In popular music, this particular part is mostly used to provide rhythmic or harmonic support and is usually played on the root or fifth of a chord and it stresses on the strong beats and caters to their requirement.
However, any instrument playing the lower chords and providing anchor to the piece of music, at a particular point, is doing the job of a bass instrument. In the same manner, instruments that are classified in this category may not always be playing the role of a bass instrument.
Instruments that accompany the softer parts of a composition but at the same time fit into the whole power of the ensemble as well, are classified as double bass instruments.
Within the category of bass instruments as well, there is a further classification of String bass instruments and bass wind instruments,
The string bass instruments are double bass, the more commonly used bass guitar and washtub bass. Within the bass wind instruments, there is a further classification of woodwind instruments and brass instruments. The woodwind instruments are bassoon, bass clarinet and bass saxophone and the brass instruments are tumba, bass trombone and euphonium.
